History and General Biography
History: Malcolm Brady’s history is fairly well known in the wizarding world. The son of two magical bloodlines, he was born in Munich, Germany, where his parents had moved from England after World War 1 to help out the mother’s Jewish family. Malcolm was the youngest of three children, and the second magical child of the family. His eldest brother, Clarence, was a squib, a fact that brought great shame to their family. Malcolm’s father, Matthew H. Brady, was a prominent attorney in the wizarding world at the time Clarence was born. Though the family stuck together, there was always a lingering resentment from Clarence’s father towards the boy. Rachel, the second child, did display magical affinities at an early age, much to the delight of the family. In 1929, Malcolm was born as the youngest of the three.
When the Nazi regime rose, the Brady family was targeted for his mother’s Jewish heritage and sent away to concentration camps. The children were separated from their parents, whom they never saw again. Rachel, too, was separated from Clarence and Malcolm. Their magical status was unknown to their captors, a fact that Malcolm realizes in retrospect was a small measure of blessing given the Führer’s obsessive interest in the supernatural. Clarence, determined to prove his worth despite of (or perhaps because of) being a squib, organized an elaborate escape attempt. He showed great courage and leadership, but was ultimately killed in the escape. Malcolm, along with seven others, managed to escape. During the escape, perhaps fueled by grief of his brother’s death, he displayed his first magical abilities. He does not remember precisely how or what happened, only that he was able to help himself and others escape. In the escape he injured his right leg, and was forced to crawl to safety. The kindness of another escapee allowed him to survive and properly escape.
After wandering the countryside with his seven co-escapees, hiding in caves and forests as they could, they eventually made their way into the care of an underground French resistance movement. Recognizing the boy’s magical potential, he was brought to Fortecoeurs Academy of Wizardry, the all-male brother school to Beauxbatons. He was age 13 when he began his wizarding training. He had a difficult time, as he had to learn French as well as magic, and was mentally and physically scarred by his time in the concentration camp. Despite regularly meeting with counselors on the grounds, he found it difficult to focus and often lashed out at others in his grief. He was forced to walk with a cane as well, as he had injured his knee beyond the capacity of modern medicine or magic to heal at the time. Due to all of these challenges, he failed his first year of study and was forced to repeat it. Through his academic career he eventually came to terms with his pain, and was able to work through it with the help of his newfound family. He found that he had an exceptional talent for charms. He graduated at age 22.
From there, he went on to take a position at the Ministry of Magic as an understudy to a counselor. He studied for many years before eventually returning to Fortecoeurs as a counselor himself. He was able to reconnect with the surviving members of the group who had escaped together. This group met every few months to share stories about their life and how they had reintegrated back into society. He kept his magical heritage a secret, of course, but eventually fell in love with one of the other surviving children. They were married when he was age 29. They lived happily for many years, helping each other through painful memories as needed and sharing their burdens with one another. They gave birth to two children, both girls, both who went on to attend Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. One of the girls eventually took up a teaching position there; the other got married herself to a graduate of Hogwarts.
Malcolm retired in 1989 at age 60 to spend his wife’s remaining years with her. She died of heart failure in her sleep in 1994. After this, Malcolm spent many years to himself. Having come out of retirement in 2011 with the desire to move on to the next chapter in his life, he has applied for the position of Charms teacher at Hogwarts.
General Biography: Malcolm Brady usually keeps to himself. He has known great pain and great joy in life. He has always had a fondness for academic pursuits, and prefers to be alone with a good book than with other people. He is knowledgeable about a vast array of topics. He abhors violence completely, but is not afraid to do what is necessary. He has a reputation of being quite harsh sometimes, and still occasionally finds himself in a state of depression over certain events of his life. He is somewhat scatterbrained at times, but retains a sharp mind nonetheless. He has a deep seated passion for helping others through immense psychological pain, having experienced the healing effects of it himself, and believes that the human mind is the single most magical thing to have ever existed. He never turns a student away, but has been known to treat them as annoyances. A man with a complex past, Malcolm Harrison Brady is far from perfect. “But then,” he has often been known to say, “the day one of us reaches perfection is the day I believe life becomes very boring.”
Belongings:
Pet: Malcolm owns a pet red-tailed hawk, which he nursed from birth after accidentally killing the baby bird’s mother while practicing magic in the woods.
Broom: “Quiddich? My dear boy, I am frankly far too old for such endeavors.” Students have, in the past, often joked that he should just fly around on his cane. He secretly tried this once after graduation. He refuses to speak of the experience, and those few that were there for it always stifle laughs when questioned, but say nothing else.
Other: Malcolm smokes a pipe, and has quite a collection of them, as well as a collection of old books on any subject and hourglasses. He is also quite fond of bowties. An old friend convinced him once that bowties are cool.
